Two Young NCB members

We like to highlight work that Young NCB members have been doing in their local communities and through other organisations and activities. Two sisters from Rochdale were recently commended at the Rochdale Mayor Youth Awards. see below for more information...

KIRAN:

I was nominated for the Mayor's Youth Awards 2012 (Rochdale). I received the award for ''the longest serving and the most active member of the Rochdale borough wide children's council." I have attended events and meetings in parliament and I am also a children's right advocate. I was described at the awards as  "strong, confident and has used her voice to make a difference in the community.''

This was what was said at the awards ceremony on Wednesday 21st March 2012 at the Rochdale Town Hall where I received my award. I received a medal, trophy and a certificate to celebrate my achievements which were awarded by the Mayor of Rochdale.

MARIYAM:

Mariyam received her award for being one of the last seven standing candidates in the election for the children's champion of Rochdale. She had reached this final stage after an intensive process which included first applying for the post, being selected and having to attend an interview for a whole day doing a range of activities and having a question session with the Children's and Deputy Children's Champion. She then had to write a manifesto and campaign. Finally, Mariyam had to make a video which was sent to the 60+ schools in Rochdale, who were then asked to vote.

There were over 7180 votes cast by children and young people in Year 6 in the borough which was a huge turnout. At each stage the candidates were narrowed down to the final seven of which Mariyam was one.

Kiran and mariyam are also involved in the Energy Bill Revolution campaign which you can find out more about here
