Transport..the story so far..

Four years ago members of Young NCB who are part of NCB’s Board of Management expressed their concerns about transport services for children and young people. Like many others, they thought that high costs, fears for personal safety and irregular and infrequent bus and train services made it difficult for young people to get around.

Since then, NCB has been working with Young NCB and other organisations to find out more about this issue and to tell government, transport companies and local authorities about children and young people's concerns. This has included:

  • Young NCB’s Advisory Group of young people coming up with a survey and finding out other young people’s views on transport
  • Answering government consultations, working with MPs and writing to Ministers - to persuade government to tell local authorities how to tackle the travel problems experienced by young people
  • Holding regular meetings with government departments (including the Department for Transport and the Department for Children, Schools and Families) and children and young people's organisations. We also hope to meet with transport companies soon.
  • Delivering a petition of 1000 names to the Mayor of London to keep free bus travel for under 18's still in education
  • Working as part of the Coalition for Young People , which is demanding discounted fares for young people.

Current things going on:

  • Transport guidance that Young NCB contributed to - thanks to all our members who helped!. The Guidance talks about the problems experienced by young people using public transport and provides advice for those in positions of influence to make sure young people can use public transport to get to lots of different positive activities.
  • Taking action on public transport in your area – information on what you can actually do with the guidance(under “problems with public transport”).
  • Survey – UK Youth Parliament have re-focused the national campaign to specifically campaign for half adult bus fare for young people (as opposed to concessions on all public transport) and we are currently running the following consultation.
