Children's Rights
What do Young NCB members think about this issue?
- Need to learn about them younger – at primary school
- Could tie in with the PSHE curriculum as it’s being made
statutory
- Need to raise awareness among adults
- People shouldn’t abuse their rights
- Disabled children should be more involved in making decisions
about their lives
- Focus on children/young people’s right to fee safe in their
neighborhood

Come and celebrate 20 years of the United Nations
Convention on the Rights of the Child!
The Department for Children
Schools and Families and 11 MILLION, led by the new Children’s
Commissioner for England, are hosting an event to celebrate
the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights
of the Child.
They would like Young NCB members to attend
and there is also the opportunity to act as roving reporters for
the event, taking photos and interviewing guests and possibly even
filming.
The event will be attended by approximately
250 people, a mixture of adults, children and young people and
there up to 12 places available for Young NCB members. The event is
in London but it doesn’t matter where you live in England as we
will arrange and pay for your travel.
There will be performances by young people and
fun activities to get involved in.
Here are the details:
Date: Friday 20 November 2009 – This is a
school day which may be tricky for you but we can get in touch with
your school to see if they will be happy to let you leave to
attend.
Time: From 12 midday to 2pm. If you would
like to be a reporter for the event you would need to be able to
get there a bit earlier.
Place: Lancaster House, Stable Yard, St
James's, London SW1A 1BB (nearest tube station Westminster.
Refreshments: Food and drink will be
served
Other info: We will pay for your travel
and travel for a parent/carer/support worker to come with you if
you need them too. They will also be able to attend the event. If
you are travelling alone, a member of NCB staff will be able to
meet you at a train station if you would like.
Would you like to go? If so
please email or call Adriana Thomas, Young NCB Coordninator

draw names out at random. Please let us know by Wednesday
30th September.
Another exciting way to celebrate 20
years of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the
Child!!
Feeling creative?
NCB is inviting children and young people, NCB
members and staff to take part in a unique opportunity to help
celebrate this special anniversary.
We want you to help us show the positive
achievements that have been made in children’s rights issues since
1989 by choosing one of the Articles from the Convention (you
can find these here http://www.crae.org.uk/assets/files/UNCRC_CYP_version.pdf [PDF
115KB]) and describe what the article means to you and how it has
helped you to fulfill your rights.
it might help to think about..
- Why is the article important to you?
or
- In what ways in your everyday life does this right affect
you?
or
- Can you think of any specific examples of when you have been
given (or denied) this right?
You can do then do one of the following
creative pieces to illustrate this:
- An Illustration/drawings/piece of artwork
- A photograph
- A written piece (for example a short story, poem or a personal
account – maximum 500 words)
- Short video clips (which should be no more than 2 minutes
each)
What will we do with you
creations?
- An exhibition will be displayed at NCB and at the celebration
event hosted by the Department for Children, Schools and Families
and 11 MILLION (details above), with young people, government
ministers and other decision makers attending.
- We will also create an online virtual exhibition on the NCB
website so that a wide audience can view all the creative pieces of
work!
How do I get involved?
Contact Young NCB to let us know that you are
interested and we will give you more information. Please also
think about what Article you might like to choose. Bear in mind
that Article 12 - Every child has the right to express his or her
views, and those views must be taken seriously, will be very
popular so you may want to choose something different!
We will help you as much as we can if you are
stuck for ideas or not sure how you can do your creation.
What is the deadline?
The day marking the UNCRC anniversary is 20th
November. So to review the entries and display them in good
time, we would like you to return your creative work by
Friday 16th October.

And finally…
Do you have something to say about
Children’s Rights that you’d like to be heard by around 18,000
people who work with children and young people to
read?
NCB has two pages in the national Children and
Young People Now magazine which is the only dedicated weekly
magazine for professionals working with children, young people and
their families. The magazine is read by 18,000 professionals and
key decision makers.
As part of a double page spread in the October
issue, NCB would like to invite a Young NCB member to write a
comment piece (maximum 200 words) about Children’s Rights.
What would you like to say about children’s
rights?
Please let us know if you would be interested
in doing this or would like to talk about it before you decide.
The deadline for the comment piece is Tuesday
22nd September.
